The Allen county courthouse (their third) was designed by architect George H. Maetzel in the popular Second Empire style and built between 1881-1884. The dome houses four faced dials. The Allen county commissioner hired us to restore the clock faces and replace the mechanism controlling the tower clock with one as close to the original as possible. The original E. Howard clock movement had been removed years before and replaced with a modern clock movement. We happened to have an unrestored #0 E. Howard Striking tower clock in our collection to utilize for this project. Since this clock was missing some of its original parts, we fabricated casting patterns and poured some cast iron parts to match the original. The #0 E. Howard now rings the large Allen County bell.
Interesting fact:
John Dillinger, public enemy #1 was held in the Allen County Jail next to the courthouse and escaped by killing the sheriff.
